Benefits of wearing a wetsuit / For heat retention
Wearing a wetsuit helps keep you warm. Depending on the country or region, there are cases where the water temperature is cold even in summer. You can surf for a long time by wearing a wet suit. You can also surf comfortably in the midwinter sea. A full order is recommended to increase the heat retention effect of the wetsuit. If you measure your body and use a wetsuit that fits your body shape, you will be comfortable with almost no water ingress.
I am surfing in Japan. It’s summer now. Today’s temperature is 35 degrees and the water temperature is 26 degrees. I can surf in trunks for a short time. However, I wear a wetsuit (spring type). Because I love surfing and stay in the ocean for at least 3 hours. If you want to surf for a long time even in the summer, you’ll need a wetsuit.
Jack O’Neill’s Thought / I just wanted to surf longer
It seems to be the thought of Jack O’Neill, the founder of O’Neill. If you’re a surfer, don’t you think everyone agrees? I really agree with Jack O’Neill’s thoughts. Surfing is the best pleasure. I want to surf for as long as possible.
Benefits of wearing a wetsuit / To gain buoyancy
Wetsuits give you buoyancy. Surfing is a dangerous sport. Even if you wipe out and fall off the surfboard, it’s easy to swim. Even if you are swallowed by the waves, your body will float faster because of its buoyancy.
The leash code may be cut. You may be separated from the surfboard. Even in such a case, if you have a wet suit, your body will float. Wetsuits are one of the safety equipment. Especially beginners should wear it.
Even for intermediate surfers, it’s a good idea to wear a wetsuit on big wave days. It makes it easier to swim, so you don’t waste your energy.
Benefits of wearing a wetsuit / To protect the body
Surfing is a dangerous sport. If you are swallowed by the waves, the fins and nose of your surfboard may injure you. Another person’s surfboard may hurt you.
Also, in the case of a reef surf spot, you may be injured by being swallowed by the waves and hitting the reef.
In cases like the one above, a wetsuit will protect your body. (It doesn’t work like armor, but it’s safer than surfing in a swimsuit.)
Wetsuits also protect your body from jellyfish. Jellyfish poison needles cannot penetrate wetsuits.
Benefits of wearing a wetsuit / To prevent rubbing
Wetsuits protect your body from rubbing. For example, when surfing in a swimsuit, some surfers find it painful to rub against the surfboard. (Some surfers are fine. It depends on the surfer.)
If you want to avoid rubbing, it’s a good idea to wear a wetsuit.
I will talk about my case. When I surf only on trunks, my nipples and surfboard rub against each other. It hurts very much. So I wear a wetsuit.
Benefits of wearing a wetsuit / To prevent sunburn
For those who are surfing in sunny areas, sunburn can be a problem.
If you get a wetsuit, you won’t get a sunburn.
To increase the survival rate if drifting
Surfing is a dangerous sport. If swallowed by the waves, the leash cord may break. You may have lost your surfboard. You may have lost your surfboard. Also, you may not be able to return to land due to the current of the sea. In such a case, if you wear a wet suit, the survival rate will increase. You can maintain your body temperature. Also, even if you lose your surfboard, you can still float in the sea.
Comparison of buoyancy between swimwear and wetsuits
The left side of the above figure is a swimsuit. In the human body, about 2% of the body is above the water, with the chest inhaled. This 2% is the upper part of the head.
You can’t breathe with this.
Of course, if you move your hands and legs to swim, your head will be above the water.
But if I were drifting, I wouldn’t be able to keep swimming all the time.
The figure on the right is wearing a wetsuit. Wetsuits are buoyant. It’s not completely above the water above the neck, but it’s a lot easier to breathe.
Well, I found out why wearing a wetsuit improves survival.
There are many benefits to wearing a wetsuit.
How is it? Did you understand the benefits of wetsuits?
I recommend wearing wetsuits for beginner surfers.
I understand the benefits of wet suits. From now on, I will surf in wetsuits as much as possible.
