I’m having trouble improving my surfing.
I can’t speed up. What should I do?
Practice bottom turns. Bottom turn is the basic and very important technique of surfing.
It’s a turn at the bottom of the wave. Is it so important?
If you improve your bottom turn, you can speed up. Also, making a turn at the correct bottom position will increase the success rate of your next top turn or off-the-lip.
It looks like a simple technique, but it’s a very important technique, so practice it well.
Purpose of making a bottom turn
Bottom turn is a basic technique for surfing. At the bottom of the wave there is a force that lifts the surfer to the top of the wave. Use this force to reach the top of the wave. If the bottom turn is successful, you will gain speed. Also, if you have a big bottom turn, you can afford to head to the top of the wave. The purpose of the bottom turn is to speed up and take action at the top.
I understand that bottom turn is a very important technique.
The wave force is described in detail in the following articles. I encourage you to read.
How to practice bottom turn
I will talk about how to practice bottom turns. After taking off, go straight down.
Shouldn’t I go sideways after taking off?
You can make a bottom turn even if you go sideways. But for bottom turns, it’s important to know where the bottom is. To do this, go straight down. Then bend your knees deeply and sink the rails on the wave side of the surfboard to make a bottom turn. Then go to top of the wave.
What is the goodness of that practice?
After going straight down to the bottom, you need to make a big change in the direction of the surfboard to get to the top. If you don’t sink the rail firmly, the direction of the surfboard will not change. You know how to sink the rail correctly.
Also, by doing this practice, you will be able to see where the power of the bottom of the wave is. That is the correct position for the bottom turn.
So that’s it. I’ll try.
If the bottom turn is successful, you can reach the top of the wave at a tremendous speed. At first, you don’t know what the correct bottom is. So practice again and again.
Also, when you reach the top of the wave, head back to the bottom. Repeat wave bottom ⇒ top ⇒ bottom ⇒ top.
